Wild Card at Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo offers thrills and spills
FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 4, 2026) – Push came to shove at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo ProRodeo Tournament on Wild Card Wednesday.
Orin Larsen from Inglis, Manitoba, was able to take full advantage of his opportunity in the bareback riding. Larsen, who qualified for rodeo’s championships, the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) for nine consecutive years, before barely missing the last two. The top 15 contestants in the world standings qualify to compete for world championships. He finished 17th.
Larsen is on a mission to be among the top 15 again this year and a win here would certainly help. His 87-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s horse named Forgetful Nelly to win the Wild Card round put him one step closer. While the $2,000 for the win is appreciated, the opportunity to ride in the Semi-Finals and hopefully advance again is even more important.
Stetson Jorgensen had the fastest time of the night in the steer wrestling at 4.1 seconds. Jorgensen, who finished last year’s season in fifth place, hales from Blackfoot, Idaho. He qualified for last year’s NFR after winning the legendary Pendleton Roundup in Oregon just days after his son, Rattler, was born.
Now he’s working on a win here and a new buckle to take home to Rattler. Even though it’s early in the rodeo season, getting big wins here could help him secure his seventh NFR qualification.
Another father rose to the top in team roping. Header, Clay Tryan, from Billings, Montana, won a coveted Fort Worth Championship 20 years ago in Will Rogers Coliseum. This year he roped with Whip Peterson of San Simon, Arizona, and they stopped the clock in 4.0 seconds. Now Clay Tryan and his son Tyler Tryan are both competing for a spot in Saturday night’s championships.
Tyler Tryan qualified for the Semi-Finals roping with Levi Lord. They are scheduled to compete on Thursday. Clay Tryan and Peterson will compete in Semi-Finals 2 on Friday night. If they both are among the top four in those performances, they will be competing against each other on Saturday night.
Wednesday was National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, the nation’s oldest professional association for women athletes, sanctions barrel racing and breakaway roping at the FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament.
Rylee George of Oakdale, Calif., the reigning college champion breakaway roper, won her event in the Wild Card round with 1.8 seconds to advance to the Semi-Finals. Barrel racer Katelyn Scott of Odessa, Texas, who competed at her first NFR in December, was the fastest barrel racer in the Wild Card round with 16.22 seconds.
Thursday night’s Semi-Finals 1 starts at 7:30 in Dickies Arena. Eight competitors in each event will be vying for a top four finish and an opportunity to ride for a championship.
