Stock Show Expands Legacy with Heifer Superintendent’s Beef Challenge Devon Energy Corp. Signs on as Founding Sponsor
FORT WORTH, TEXAS - Creating new opportunities for youth to earn scholarships, the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, with the support of Devon Energy Corporation, is launching a new contest for junior heifer exhibitors. Called the Heifer Superintendent’s Beef Challenge, the event is designed to test an exhibitor’s knowledge of beef cattle production in an exciting quiz format. High scoring participants will then give an oral presentation.
“Devon is proud to partner with the Fort Worth Stock Show to provide scholarship opportunities for high school seniors involved in the livestock industry,” said Brad Foster, Central Division vice president and general manager. “Devon has long supported youth and education initiatives and believes the Heifer Superintendent’s Beef Challenge is a great opportunity to assist Texas youth with their continuing education.”
During the Beef Challenge participants will be quizzed on the various aspects of beef cattle production. Those with the highest scores will then give a two-minute “sales presentation” on why ranchers should utilize the breed of heifer shown by the exhibitor. The combined scores will determine the ranking of the scholarship winners.
“The Stock Show’s heifer superintendents are excited to provide an opportunity for the students to put their beef cattle know-how to work and pad the college funds of those who excel,” said long-time superintendent, Tom Woodward. “We are extremely grateful to our founding sponsor, Devon Energy Corporation.”
Stock Show President, W.R. Watt, Jr. echoed Woodward’s comments. “The heifer superintendents have excelled at expanding the efforts of a first-class heifer show through the creation of this new scholarship program,” he said. “Education is a major objective of the Stock Show and this contest will also enhance our exhibitor’s knowledge of the business of producing quality beef cattle.”
